Certificate II in Plumbing (Pre-apprenticeship)

Course overview

This course is designed for new entrants to the plumbing industry who are preparing to seek a plumbing apprenticeship. It will provide learners with a range of introductory plumbing skills and knowledge that will make them more attractive to prospective employers. By completing this course learners will gain;

• industry knowledge
• hand on experience
• workplace exposure.

It is anticipated that learners who complete this qualification will be in a position to apply for employment as a plumbing apprentice.

Master Plumbers (RTO #3937) delivers the qualification 22304VIC Certificate II in Plumbing (Pre-apprenticeship) with Victorian and Commonwealth Government funding.

An application and interview process is involved, including a language, literacy and numeracy pre-assessment.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course.

However it is recommended that learners are able to demonstrate language, literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to Level 2 of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF).

All new entrants to the Certificate II in Plumbing (Pre-Apprenticeship) will be required to undergo a pre assessment of their language, literacy and numeracy designed to identify their level of ability against the ACSF.

Course structure

• Course delivery is structured as follows:
  • 416  hours of trainer led learning and assessment, delivered over 13 weeks (eight hours per day, four days per week)
  • plus 72 hrs practical work placement (one day a week, for nine  weeks)

• VU21794 – Prepare to work in the plumbing industry
• CPCCCM1015A – Carry out measurements and calculations
• VU21795 – Use and apply basic levelling equipment for plumbing
• CPCCCM2001A – Read and interpret plans and specifications
• CUVACD303A – Produce technical drawings
• VU21797 – Use basic plumbing hand tools
• VU21798 – Use basic power tools
• VU21793 – Perform basic oxy-acetylene welding and cutting
• VU21796 – Use basic electric welding equipment and techniques
• VU21799 – Use plumbing pipes, fittings and fixtures to simulate plumbing installations
• VU21789 – Apply basic sheet metal practices
• VU21791 – Fabricate simple plumbing pipe systems
• VU21790 – Cut and penetrate building materials and structures
• VU21792 – Identify career pathways in the plumbing industry

*These two units are delivered and assessed by CEPUTEC (RTO #4612)

Course duration

13 weeks full time (4 days per week structured RTO based learning; time allowance for 9 days work experience)

Work experience

Master Plumbers strongly encourages all learners to undertake practical work experience during the course to apply their theoretical skills in real work situations. The course delivery has been arranged to allow self directed learners to seek non assessable work experience opportunities for a minimum of 9 Wednesdays during the course.

Learners must identify their own work experience opportunities.

Course outcomes

On successful completion of this course learners will be able to:

Recognition

On successful completion learners will receive the qualification 22304VIC Certificate II in Plumbing (Pre-apprenticeship).

As the course contains a number of units from nationally endorsed Training Packages, credit transfer is available into qualifications/courses that contain these units.

Learners may apply to have the skills and knowledge they develop by completing 22304VIC Certificate II in Plumbing (Pre-apprenticeship) recognised when enrolling in CPC32413 Certificate III in Plumbing.

Delivery arrangements

The delivery of this course is structured into ‘streams’ to replicate the different sectors of the plumbing industry.

Training delivery methods include;

Practical activities and learning tasks completed in the practical workshop (approximately 70% of the course).
Face to face teacher led theory classes (approximately 30% of the course)
Guest speakers.

The course is delivered at the purpose built facilities at the Plumbing Industry Climate Action Centre (PICAC).

Assessment arrangements

Assessment for this course includes a combination of strategies such as:

• Oral and/or written questioning to test underpinning knowledge
• practical tasks relevant to plumbing work to a standard consistent with AQF level II indicators
• Short written reports/assignments on plumbing issues and topics.
