Disconnect/reconnect appliances connected to low voltage installation wiring

Overview

This course will provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to disconnect and reconnect appliances connected to low voltage installation wiring. This work may be incidental to or a primary and regular function of work related to a principle work function.

The course addresses composite appliances (air conditioners), water heaters and motors. It encompasses working safely, identifying supply arrangements, following isolation procedures, selecting and using testing and measuring devices, terminating and connecting cables and conductors, safely testing and reporting. This course excludes disconnecting or reconnecting circuits at a switchboard or to general electrical accessories (including switches, socket outlets, circuit protective devices etc); or installation of or alteration to any part of the fixed electrical wiring system (defined as electrical installing work).
This course does not cover rectifying faults.

Work associated with this unit is undertaken within the scope of:

• AS/NZS4836: 2001 Safe working on low voltage electrical installations
• local licensing requirements – Energy Safe Victoria

Note – external course assessment occurs one week after course completion

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisite units for this unit of competency.

Learners who wish to complete this course and seek license in this area are advised to make application to Energy Safe Victoria prior to enrolling.

It is also recommended that learners are able to demonstrate language, literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to Level 3 of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF).

All new entrants to this unit will be required to undergo a pre assessment of their language, literacy and numeracy designed to identify their level of ability against the ACSF and to perform complex calculations.

Course structure

This course is delivered over a seven (7) day period. The seven (7) days are broken into two blocks:

• first block is four (4) days
• second block is three (3) days

Approximately five (5) days after successful completion of the course, eligible learners may undertake an external practical exam assessed by Energy Safe Victoria (ESV) assessors to obtain their restricted electrical licence (REL Class 2).

Course duration

60 hours (7 days).

The three course units will be delivered concurrently to learners. Learners enrol in the units that match their restricted electrical licence classification requirement; they may enrol in either one or two units.

Course outcome

On successful completion of UEENEEP012A Disconnect-reconnect composite appliances connected to a low voltage installation wiring learners will be able to:

• Disconnect electrical equipment
• Reconnect electrical equipment
• Test the reconnected electrical equipment for safe operation
• Identify and report faults
• Provide status report(s).

On successful completion of UEENEEP014A Disconnect-reconnect water heaters connected to a low voltage installation wiring learners will be able to:

• Disconnect water heaters
• Reconnect water heaters
• Test the reconnected water heaters for safe operation
• Identify and report faults
• Provide status report(s)

On successful completion of UEENEEP015A Disconnect-reconnect motors connected to a low voltage installation wiring learners will be able to:

• Disconnect motors
• Reconnect motors
• Test the reconnected motor for safe operation
• Identify and report faults
• Provide status report(s)

Course recognition

Participants successfully completing this course will receive a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment for the unit/s undertaken.

Assessment arrangements

Assessment for this course requires participants to:

• complete a theory assessment
• undertake practical assessment/s related to the equipment classification type/s selected by the participant

External assessment

Approximately five (5) days after successful completion of the course, eligible learners may undertake an external practical exam assessed by Energy Safe Victoria (ESV) assessors to obtain their restricted electrical licence (REL Class 2).
